Maggie Jackson's Independent Dental Hygiene Service (MIDHS) is an innovative network of hygienist-led dental practices accepting direct referrals from dentists to treat patients with periodontal problems.
Founded in 2007 by dedicated dental hygienist Maggie Jackson MPhil EDH Dip DHE FAETC, MIDHS has gone from strength to strength, helping more and more dentists, hygienists and their patients to control periodontal diseases.
So far, we have practices in Mossley, Lancashire; in Manchester; in Cheadle, Cheshire and in Colchester, Essex. More will be opening soon! The Future of Dental Hygiene
After many years working in a specialist referral practice it was a natural progression, when legislation allowed, for Maggie Jackson to open a hygienist service in her own practice to accept direct referrals from dentists. The intention is to be a kind of ‘SWAT’ team to offer periodontal treatment to the patient under the referring dentist’s control and prescription.
Maggie and the other like-minded hygienists who make up MIDHS have the confidence and a rather ‘golden touch’ born from experience to treat many patients who are prone to suffer permanent damage to the supporting gum and bone tissues around their teeth identified as destructive periodontal disease. MIDHS is developing a number of sites, initially in the North West, as referral treatment centres for patients with overt gum disease, complaints or symptoms of gum recession, plaque, calculus deposits or bleeding from the gums.
We are, we believe, the first unique hygienist referral practice in the UK for dentists, hygienists and their patients with gum problems and where dentists can refer and prescribe the treatment of patients with persistent periodontal symptoms. In addition to working in a more usual role focusing on preventative care or cosmetic scaling and polishing of teeth, the team undertake a more therapeutic function, giving patients and dentists a choice of local treatment centres that will concentrate on treatment of periodontal problems and the maintenance of disease-prone patients.

Patient Feedback

For Patients
If you suffer from bleeding gums and discomfort in your mouth, help is at hand! Once your dentist has prescribed treatment and referred you to us, we can provide therapy to stabilise your condition and prevent further deterioration.
Not only do we offer top-quality treatment, we can also give you the benefit of our decades of experience and advise you how to take care of your teeth and gums so as to preserve your smile for the rest of your life.
We pride ourselves on having the time to give expert care and sound advice to all the patients we treat.
We offer convenient appointments (including evenings and Saturdays), for very reasonable fees.
For Dentists
If you have a patient who needs urgent dental hygienist therapy for periodontal problems, you now have the option to refer them to our team at MIDHS, headed by Maggie who has an MPhil in periodontology.
This way, your patient can by-pass the dental hospitals' - or even your own hygienist's - waiting lists and be treated very soon by a well qualifed, experienced hygienist following your prescription.
We have a proven track record of success in vastly improving the oral health and hygiene of even the most 'difficult' patients.
Referring a patient to us enhances the service you offer. We operate as your 'off-site' hygienist and report back to you at every stage.
For Hygienists
If your time is fully booked and you have a patient in urgent need of treatment - or if you consider a patient requires therapy more complex than you feel able to provide within your practice ethos - you can ask your dentist to refer them to MIDHS without hesitation. We will provide chartings and records for your future reference.
If you would like to, you are welcome to accompany your patient and observe how we treat them.
We offer verifiable CPD for those wishing to advance their skills and confidence in periodontal treatment methods.
If a patient's needs are out of your comfort zone, don't compromise, suggest a referral to MIDHS.
We accept referrals for dental hygienist therapies but do not claim to be a specialist periodontal practice. At no time will we operate beyond our entitlement, qualification or experience.
